Lois Brenda Allen

Lois Brenda Allen (7/4/1939-2/21/2023) of Bessemer, AL was the beloved
daughter of Dortha Mae Wurm Allen and Joe R. Allen of Kentucky. She is survived
by numerous cousins including Sue Lust, Jennifer (Jason) Cranston, Amy (Doug)
Smiddy, Kurt (Ellen) Lust and Dewey (June Aultz) E. Davis, Jr. She graduated from
Georgetown College in Kentucky earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She also
graduated from Michigan State University with a Master of Science and, later,
University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a Doctor of Philosophy. Her career
focused on microbiological research and teaching. She worked at ICN Nucleic Acid
Research Institute in Irvine, CA; University of North Texas Health Science Center,
Ft. Worth, TX; Southern Research Institute, Birmingham, AL; and owned Southern
Microbiology Associates in Bessemer, AL. Her knowledgeable and plain-spoken
manner made her a much beloved teacher in the laboratory and Medical
Microbiology classes. Lois gained many friends with her quick wit, good humor,
intelligence and genuine kindness. She dearly loved her family and her friends.
She enjoyed dogs (especially Corgis), fishing, gardening, audiobooks, classical
music and piano performances. A memorial service will be held at Pleasant Hill
United Methodist Church on March 22, 2023 at 1 pm. She will be buried beside
her parents at Reuben Allen Cemetery in Warco, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests donations to Salvation Army or the charity of your choice.
