William Henry Mitchell was born into this earthly life April 21, 1946 to Warren Henry and Martha Mills Mitchell. William "BillyRed" entered into eternal life November 23, 2022 surrounded by the love of his family. He joyfully reunited with his late son Geoffrey Scott Mitchell. William graduated from Fairfield High School in 1964. While there he enjoyed competitive sports partipating in basketball, football and his favorite, running track. The many friends made during those years have lasted to this day. William served in the Air National Guard in Birmingham. He briefly attended Samford University until called to work for U.S. Steel as a railroad employee, following in the steps of his grandfather. Amoung the various positions he held was General Chairman of the UTU working diligently for the betterment of his union members. His career lasted more than 34 years with BSRR retiring as Assistant Train Master. His first love was riding the train. Auburn football was a close second and his ability to tell a good story from the past was never far away. William continued his competitive spirit by bowling. Throughout the years he competed in tournaments across the nation. One of his teams won 1st Place in the Greater Birmingham City Bowling Tournament. In 2012 he and best friend since childhood, Johnny Wynn won 1st Place in the Doubles Tournament in Birmingham. He traveled with friends every year possible to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada to compete. BillyRed earned the Nick name "Cash" because he somehow always finished in the money. William "Pop" was always ready to give a smile, encouraging words of support and hugs. His family knew his love for them was unconditional. He was so proud to be a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Beverly Chism Mitchell, daughters, Stephanie (David) Alvis, Wendy (Gene) Pridham, Denise Davis, and son, JP (Misty) Donley. Pop was beloved by his grandchildren, Courtney, Caleb, Katie, Sydney, Baker, Georgia and Jade and one great-grandchild, Rosie. William is also survived by his younger brother, Mark (Rhonda) Mitchell, many family members and a host of friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned for Spring 2023.
